Staring at the stars

The end of the day, the best part of it: the moment when they could just lie in the bed, next to each other, relax and forget about everything for a while. The moment when they could being themselves and leave all the rest out.
The day had been quite tiring and Commander Shepard was planning to join Kaidan which was lying in the bed. When he reached the Major he laid down on his back, his head was almost against Kaidan’s and both started staring at the stars, over the window on the ceiling.
Silence.
"It scares me" said the Major after a few seconds. His voice was soft and deep.
"Hm?" Shepard glanced at him for a moment.
"The universe. Infinity."
Shepard chuckled. “I don’t believe you” he said looking back at the stars.
"I mean… when I think about it, it scares me. It’s huge, probably we don’t even know what is hiding out there. Maybe the Reapers are nothing in comparison. One of my first memories, as a kid, is when I was two or three years old. We still didn’t know that aliens existed. One year later everything changed."
"I know" whispered Shepard.
"It’s frightening, but also fascinating."
"It is" he answered turning his head to him and placing a gentle kiss on his temple, then he closed his eyes and inhaled the Major’s scent.
"Can you believe it, Shepard? Me and you, together, in all of this. It’s crazy" said Alenko turning his head to him as well.
They stared in each other eyes for a while, then a smile appeared on Shepard’s face.
"It’s crazy. And wonderful. And all that I want. You and me… It’s perfect" said the Commander.
Those words filled Kaidan’s heart with joy, but Shepard found a bit of sadness deep in his eyes.
The canadian sighed. “You know… me and you, it’s the only thing that keeps me going when I think that everything is lost, when everything turn out too hard, when all my hopes are gone” he admitted.
Shepard smiled. “I know what you mean. It’s the same for me. And keep hoping Kaidan, because I’m here to fight for the galaxy but first of all I’m here to fight for you and for the chance to see the dawn of a new era together” he whispered.
The Major’s heart skipped a beat: that was all he ever wanted, all he ever needed. “I love you, Shepard.”
"I love you too" he answered leaning closer to kiss him.

"I’d be lost without you."
